India became the second team after defending champions Australia to qualify for ICC Cricket World Cup 2019 (CWC 2019) semi-finals. Team India defeated Bangladesh by 28 runs and thus sealed their place in the last four. With India’s win, Bangladesh is now out of semi-finals race. And three teams- England, New Zealand and Pakistan, are in contention for two vacant spots. Sri Lanka, South Africa, West Indies, and Afghanistan have been already knocked out of the tournament.
Hosts England faced a defeat against Sri Lanka that opened the gates for Pakistan, who defeated South Africa and New Zealand to stay alive in the tournament. England, however, bounced back to beat India and inched closer towards the semis spot.
New Zealand, on the other hand, were comfortably poised for a semis spot but defeats to Pakistan and Australia made their road little tough. The Kiwis face home side England and it is a virtual quarter-final. Below we take a look at different scenarios for teams to qualify for CWC 2019 semi-finals:
The equation for hosts England is simple. They need to beat New Zealand in their last match to qualify for the semis. England as of now have ten points from eight matches and victory against Kiwis will take them to 11 points. In case, England lose to New Zealand, they will then have to hope for Bangladesh’s win over Pakistan. A washout against in England vs New Zealand will eliminate Pakistan on Net Run Rate (NRR).
Here’s a look at CWC19 semi-final qualification scenario for New Zealand
New Zealand have 11 points from eight matches and a win against England will help the advance to the last four. In case, New Zealand lose to England, they can still qualify for semis irrespective of Pakistan’s win over Bangladesh but will have to make sure that the margin of defeat is not that big.
Here’s a look at CWC19 semi-final qualification scenario for Pakistan
Things look bleak for Pakistan but certainly not impossible. First they need to hope for New Zealand’s win against England and then the Green Shirts will have to beat Bangladesh to go through. If New Zealand faces defeat England, Pakistan’s qualification process will become complicated. They will have to beat Bangladesh by a huge margin and that too only if England’s win margin over New Zealand is huge as well. So, realistically Pakistan’s chances now depend on New Zealand’s win.
Australia and India are likely to finish on first and second place on the ICC CWC 2019 points table at the end of round-robin stage. As per the format for CWC19, the table -topper will meet the fourth placed team in first semi-finals. And in the second semis, second and third placed teams will lock horns for a place in the finals. The CWC 2019 final will be played on July 14 at Lord’s.
